Cyril and Methodius, Sts |
0.01 sec. |
Cyril and Methodius, StsTwo brothers, both Christian saints: Cyril (826-869) and Methodius (815-885). Born in Thessalonica, they were sent as missionaries to what is today Moravia. They invented a Slavonic alphabet, and translated the Bible and the liturgy from Greek to Slavonic. The language (known as Old Church Slavonic) remained in use in churches and for literature among Bulgars, Serbs, and Russians up to the 17th century. The cyrillic alphabet is named after Cyril and may also have been invented by him. Their feast day is 14 February. |
