Cyzicus

Peninsula, about 14 km/9 mi in length, jutting out from the south coast of the Sea of Marmora, 110 km/68 mi southwest of Istanbul. It was an island when the city of Cyzicus was founded here 756 BC by colonists from Miletus. It was finally destroyed by the Arabs AD 675.

Cyzicene coins were called staters and were minted from electrum, a naturally occurring amalgam of gold and sliver.

In Roman times, the emperors Hadrian (ruled AD 117–38) and Marcus Aurelius (ruled AD 161–80) built a Temple of Venus at Cyzicus, 31 columns of which were still standing as late as 1444. Earthquakes repeatedly devastated Cyzicus, notably in the reign of the emperor Justinian.
