Nicholas I (1796–1855)

Tsar of Russia from 1825. His Balkan ambitions led to war with Turkey 1827–29 and the Crimean War 1853–56.

Particularly noteworthy, a 1 1/2 Rubles (10 Zloty) featuring a bust portrait of Czar Nicholas I on the obverse and Tsaritsa Alexandra Fedorovna on the reverse surrounded by the encircled heads of the Grand Dukes and Grand Duchesses brought $109,250 in very competitive bidding.
Czar Nicholas I coined the memorable phrase that in the Ottoman Empire, "we have a sick man on our hands", but when he proposed to kill this sick man off, the British sided with the Ottomans in the Crimean War.
