Czyź, Henryk (1923– )

Polish conductor and composer. He held posts with the orchestras of Łódź and Kraków 1957–68, and in 1966 was in Munster to conduct the first performance of Penderecki's St Luke Passion. In 1969 he gave the first performance, in Hamburg, of Penderecki's opera The Devils of Loudun. He led the Düsseldorf orchestra 1971–74 before returning to Łódź until 1980, when he became a professor at the Warsaw Academy. His US debut was in 1973, with the Minnesota Orchestra.

Works

Etude for orchestra (1949), Symphonic Variations (1952), and the comic opera Kynolog w rosterce (The Dog-lover's Dilemma; composed in 1964, and produced at Kraków in 1967).
