Yonne

Département in the Bourgogne region of France; area 7,425 sq km/2,867 sq mi; population (1999 est) 333,200. The River Yonne flows through it, and the land is mostly flat. The département is mainly agricultural, growing vines, cereals, sugar beet, and market-garden produce, and raising livestock. The principal towns are Auxerre (the administrative centre), and Sens; Chablis is the centre of the wine-producing region.

Yonne is formed from parts of the former provinces of Champagne, Orléanais, and Burgundy.
