Dönch, Karl (1915–1994)

German bass-baritone. He made his debut in Gorlitz in 1936, and sang at the Vienna Staatsoper from 1947. He was often heard as Beckmesser and sang in the first performance of Martin's Tempest in 1956. He sang at Salzburg from 1951, as Alfonso and Berg's Doctor, and as Leiokritos in the 1954 first performance of Liebermann's Penelope. He appeared at the New York Metropolitan Opera House 1959–67, and guested at Milan.
