Düren

City in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany, on the River Ruhr, 51 km/32 mi southwest of Düsseldorf; population (2005 est) 93,700; urban district 272,500. Metal goods, textiles, paper, and sugar are manufactured here. Düren dates from before 911.

As World War II drew to a close, in early 1945, Düren was the scene of bitter fighting for control of the strategically vital river.
