disco musicInternational style of dance music of the 1970s with a heavily emphasized beat, descended from funk. It was designed to be played in discotheques rather than performed live; hence the production was often more important than the performer, and drum machines came to dominate. Self-produced US disco group KC and the Sunshine Band (formed 1973) had five number-one hits, including ‘Shake Your Booty’ (1976). German producer Giorgio Moroder (1941– ) created numerous disco hits, many of them with US singer Donna Summer (1948– ), including ‘Love to Love You, Baby’ (1975) and ‘I Feel Love’ (1977). US producer Nile Rodgers (1952– ) was a member of disco group Chic (1977–83), whose hits include ‘Everybody Dance’ (1978) and ‘Good Times’ (1979). Disco music was featured in the 1977 film Saturday Night Fever. How to thank TFD for its existence?
