Dumas

Town and administrative headquarters of Moore County, northwest Texas; population (2000) 13,700. It is situated in the Texas panhandle, 72 km/45 mi north-northwest of Amarillo. Founded in 1892, it is in the centre of an irrigated area producing sorghum, castor beans, vegetables, wheat, and cattle. Natural gas fields in the vicinity are the major US helium producer. The city has a zinc smelter and oil refineries. Nitrates, carbon black, and fertilizer are manufactured. Lake Meredith National Recreation Area is 32 km/20 mi to the southeast.
