Dahlonega

Town and administrative headquarters of Lumpkin County, north Georgia; population (2000) 3,600. It is situated 100 km/60 mi north-northeast of Atlanta. It was established when gold was discovered in the area in 1829. A Federal mint operated here from 1838–61. The city is now a trade centre, producing lumber and processing poultry. It is also a mountain vacation gateway. It is home to North Georgia College (1873).
