Dakota County

County in east-central Minnesota; area 1,487 sq km/574 sq mi; population (1990) 275,227. It is bordered by the Minnesota River to the northwest, the Mississippi River to the northeast, and the Cannon River to the south. Lying immediately south of St Paul, it contains many Twin Cities suburbs, such as Hastings (the county administrative headquarters), South St Paul, Mendota Heights, and Eagan.
