Da Lat

Town in southern Vietnam, situated 80 km/50 mi northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, at 1,525 m/5,003 ft above sea level; population (2000 est) 135,000. The climate here is cool owing to the altitude, and there are hotels and European-style villas. The city has grown rapidly in recent years because of government encouragement for people to move into new area of economic development. The town is the site of a university and a nuclear research centre. Rubber is produced in the area.

Da Lat lies in the Lang Bian Mountains and was previously the summer capital of Vietnam. It was the summer residence of the governor-general 1940–45, and of Emperor Bao Dai. The French used Da Lat as a hill station.
