Dalayrac, Nicolas-Marie (1753-1809)

French composer. In 1777 he published six string quartets, and two small operas were performed privately in 1781. The following year he made his debut with L'Eclipse totale/The Total Eclipse at the Théâtre Italien. He changed his name from its aristocratic form during the Revolution, and adapted operatic airs to lyrics with Republican sentiments.

He first intended to study law, then in 1774 went to Versailles to embark on a military career, but his main interest was music and he took lessons in composition from Honoré Langlé (1741-1807).
