Dalberg, Frederick (1908–1988)

English bass. He studied in Dresden and Leipzig, after a childhood in South Africa, and made his debut in 1931. He sang at Leipzig, Berlin, and Vienna, and from 1942 to 1951 appeared at Bayreuth, as Hagen, Pogner, and Fafner. He sang at Munich 1948–51 and at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, during the 1950s. He created Claggart in Billy Budd (1951) and took part in the stage premiere in Britain of Wozzeck (1952) and the first performance of Gloriana (1953). Within the space of ten years he had sung for Hitler at Bayreuth and before Queen Elizabeth II at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. He appeared at Glyndebourne in 1952, as Banquo, and sang at Mannheim from 1957.
