Dalby, Martin (1942– )

Scottish composer. He studied at the Royal College of Music, London, with Herbert Howells (composition) and Frederick Riddle (viola). He has been influenced by jazz and by Spanish music; from 1965 he has held administrative posts in London and Glasgow.

Works

Orchestral

symphony (1970), Concerto Martin Pescatore, for strings (1971), viola concerto (1974), Nozze di primavera for orchestra (1984).

Vocal

Keeper of the Pass for soprano and instruments (1971), Orpheus for chorus, narrator, and 11 instruments (1972), Call for the Hazel Tree, for chorus and electronics (1979).

Chamber

Yet Still She is the Moon, brass septet (1973), Aleph for eight instruments (1975), Man Walking, octet for wind and strings (1980); two piano sonatas (1985, 1989).
