Daldry, Stephen (1961– )

English theatre director. As artistic director at the Gate Theatre, Notting Hill, London, 1989–92, his award-winning work included Damned for Despair (1991). He joined the Royal Court Theatre in 1992, succeeding Max Stafford-Clark as artistic director in 1993. His production of An Inspector Calls won a Laurence Olivier award in London, and a Tony award for Best Revival in 1994 on Broadway.

Daldry studied at Sheffield university, then ran away with a circus to Italy. On his return he was an associate director of the Metro Theatre 1984–86 and of the Sheffield Crucible Theatre 1986–88. Productions of his hugely successful An Inspector Calls have appeared in London at the Royal National Theatre (1992), the Aldwych (1994), and the Garrick (1995).
