Also found in: Encyclopedia 0.02 sec.

Dale, Chester (1883–1962)

US banker and art collector. Starting as a Wall Street office boy, he became a member of the New York Stock Exchange, specializing in utility bonds. This made him very wealthy and enabled him to amass an art collection, the bulk of which was donated to the National Gallery.

Born in New York City, he was educated locally. It was in 1918 that his studies paid off and he joined the New York Stock Exchange. His collection of US and French art was put together with the help of his first wife, Maud Murray Thompson Dale (1875–1953). He was a trustee of many museums.
