Dale, Richard

Dale, Richard (1756–1826)

American naval officer. As first lieutenant, under John Paul Jones, on the Bonhomme Richard, he was involved in a battle with the Serapis in 1779. After 1783, he alternated between merchant ships and the US Navy, before retiring to Philadelphia.

He was born in Norfolk County, Virginia. Before the battle with the Serapis, he had an adventurous career at sea, including two spells of being imprisoned by the British. Prior to his retirement, he had commanded the squadron that blockaded Tripoli (1801–02).
