Daly's Theatre

Former theatre in Leicester Square, London, 1893–1937. It was built by the English theatre manager George Edwardes (1852–1915) for Augustin Daly. After Daly left in 1894, Edwardes took over the theatre and it became the home of musical comedy. It suffered financial collapse and was eventually pulled down.

New York

In New York, there were several theatres of this name. The first two were on Fifth Avenue. The third, formerly Wood's Museum, opened in 1879 and was demolished in 1920. It was here that Daly had his greatest successes. Another Daly's opened as the Davenport in 1909 and was demolished in 1959.

London

Under Edwardes, the London Daly's was one of the most successful theatres in the British capital for 15 years, with such productions as The Geisha 1896, A Country Girl 1902, The Merry Widow 1907, and The Dollar Princess 1909. During World War I, under Oscar Asche, The Maid of the Mountains 1917 had a long run, as did Madame Pompadour 1923, both by Frederick Lonsdale. The theatre was taken over in 1922 by James White, the Rochdale millionaire, and was involved in a financial crash which led to his suicide in 1927.
