Dalis, Irene (1925– )

US mezzo. She studied in New York and Milan and with Margarete Klose in Berlin. She made her debut at Oldenburg in 1953, and sang in Berlin 1955–60. She sang Eboli at her New York Metropolitan Opera House debut in 1957 and first sang at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, in 1958. She appeared at Bayreuth 1961–63 as Kundry and Ortrud, and was much admired as the Nurse in Die Frau ohne Schatten (at the Sadler's Wells Theatre, London, in 1966, in the opera's first London performance). She was founder and executive director of Opera San José from 1984.
