Dalkey

Seaside and commuter town in County Dublin, Republic of Ireland; population (2002) 8,700. It stands at the entrance to Dublin Bay, 14 km/9 mi from the city of Dublin, and has two harbours. Dalkey Island is the largest of a group of rocky islands directly offshore. The ruins of St Begnet's church are on the island, as well as a Martello tower (circular coastal defensive tower). There are remains of three of the seven castles which guarded the town and harbour in medieval times.

One of the castles is incorporated into the town hall; Archbold's Castle is also on the main street; and Bullock Castle overlooks Bullock Harbour.

The dramatist George Bernard Shaw lived in Torca Cottage on Dalkey Hill 1866–74.
