Dall, William Healey

Dall, William Healey (1845–1927)

US naturalist. For many years he was involved in expeditions to Alaska and surveys of Alaska and other parts of the USA. He wrote up his findings in two books. There is a bighorn sheep named after him.

He was born in Boston, Massachusetts, and he studied natural sciences with Louis Agassiz. He led the Western Union Telegraph Expedition to Alaska (1865–68). He joined the US Coast Survey of Alaska (1871–84) and then the US Geological Survey (1884–1923). His wrote Alaska and its Resources in 1870 and the two-volume Pacific Coast Pilot (1879–83). He also published extensively on molluscs.
