Dallas County

County in northeast Texas; area 2,279 sq km/880 sq mi; population (1990) 1,852,810. Its administrative headquarters are at Dallas; the city and its satellites, including Garland, Mesquite, Richardson, Grand Prairie, Farmers Branch, and Irving, have expanded since the 1940s to fill much of this cotton, vegetable, grain, and livestock producing prairie area with industrial, commercial, and residential development. The Trinity River and its tributaries flow through the county.
