Damaraland

Central region of Namibia between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, traditionally referring to the home area of the Nama- or Damara-speaking Damara and Herero-speaking Herero peoples. The region is largely grassland, and is used for cattle ranching and rearing karakul (breed of sheep). Following regional restructuring 1992-93, Damaraland is now part of Erongo and Kunene districts.

In the 1960s the South African Odendaal Commission recommended the establishment of a more closely defined Damaraland homeland extending from Sesfontein (near the Kaokoland homeland) in the north to Okombake and Otjohorongo (north of the Swakopmund-Windhoek railway) in the south, covering an area of 48,000 sq km/18,533 sq mi. The administrative centre was Khorixas.
