Damaraland

Central region of Namibia between the Namib and Kalahari deserts, traditionally referring to the home area of the Nama- or Damara-speaking Damara and Herero-speaking Herero peoples. The region is largely grassland, and is used for cattle ranching and rearing karakul (breed of sheep). Following regional restructuring 1992–93, Damaraland is now part of Erongo and Kunene districts.

In the 1960s the South African Odendaal Commission recommended the establishment of a more closely defined Damaraland homeland extending from Sesfontein (near the Kaokoland homeland) in the north to Okombake and Otjohorongo (north of the Swakopmund–Windhoek railway) in the south, covering an area of 48,000 sq km/18,533 sq mi. The administrative centre was Khorixas.
