Damavand, Mount

Highest point of the Elburz Mountains, northern Iran; height 5,601 m/18,376 ft. Mount Damavand is an extinct volcanic cone with a permanent snowcap. In clear weather the mountain is visible from over 300 km/186 mi away. The nearby town of Damavand is a popular resort.

Mount Damavand plays an important part in Persian legend. The mountain was first ascended by the British climber W Taylor Thomson in 1837.
