Damme

In the Middle Ages, the port for Bruges, in the province of West Flanders, Belgium. Damme is now a village some 8 km/5 mi northeast of that city.

Damme was an important port, connected by the Zwyn channel with the North Sea, and had a fortified harbour. At the height of its prosperity, Damme had a population of 10,000. However, the channel silted up in the 15th century.
