Danaüs

In Greek mythology, a king of Argos who had 50 daughters. His twin brother Aegyptus, King of Egypt, had 50 sons. When they demanded their cousins in marriage, Danaüs gave each girl a dagger with which to slay her husband on her wedding night.

All the sons of Aegyptus were thus murdered, except for Lynceus, who was spared by Hypermestra and afterwards avenged his brothers by killing Danaüs, whom he succeeded as king of Argos.

According to some poets, the daughters of Danaüs were punished for ever in Hades by being set the impossible task of filling a sieve with water.
