Dana Point

Town in Orange County, southwest California; population (1990) 31,896. It is situated 80 km/50 mi southeast of Los Angeles. It is a popular resort, yachting port, and residential community. In the early 19th century it was a major port; the sailor/writer Richard Henry Dana, here in the 1830s, described how hides were thrown from cliffs to crews waiting on the beach below. In 1924 Dana Point was named after him.
