Da Nang

Port city (formerly Tourane) of southern Vietnam, centrally placed on the South China Sea, 80 km/50 mi southeast of Hué; population (1995 est) 416,000. Following the reunion of North and South Vietnam, the major part of the population was dispersed in 1976 to rural areas. Textiles are an important local industry.

A major US military base during the Vietnam War, it is now used by the USSR.

Danang is commonly called the "Paris of the Orient," and many of the restaurants were a pleasure to visit.
The chief of a Montagnard village southwest of Danang told Hickey in 1957 that his brother, who had gone to North Vietnam after the Geneva Accords of 1954, had returned and was with the "Viet Minh" in the jungle near the village.
