Rajahmundry

Town in Andhra Pradesh state, east-central India; population (1991) 403,800. It is situated on the Godavari River, sacred to Hindus, a few kilometres upstream from the main delta irrigation works. Pilgrims visit the riverside temples and there is a festival every 12 years. Carpet manufacture and sandalwood production are the main industries.

It was once the capital of the kings of Orissa and is now a major Telugu-speaking centre.
