Danby, Thomas Osborne (1631-1712)

British Tory politician. He entered Parliament 1665, acted as Charles II's chief minister 1673-78 and was created earl of Danby 1674, but was imprisoned in the Tower of London 1678-84. In 1688 he signed the invitation to William of Orange to take the throne. Succeeded to baronetcy 1647. Danby was again chief minister 1690-95, and in 1694 was created Duke of Leeds.
