Dandong

City in Liaoning province, northeast China, and one of the chief ports in the region, near the mouth of the Yalu River; population (1994) 2,366,000. It is the most northerly ice-free deep-water harbour in China and an important junction on the railway line from Shenyang to North Korea. The area has been designated a major export production centre in the province. Industries include lumber milling, paper and match manufacture, chemicals, electronics, non-ferrous metal refining, cotton and silk weaving, and agricultural processing.
