Daniel, Paul (1958– )

English conductor. He studied with Franco Ferrara, Boult, and Edward Downes and has led major orchestras in Britain and Europe; he made his US debut in 1988, with the London Sinfonietta. He was musical director of the Opera Factory, London, 1987–90, giving works by Birtwistle (Punch and Judy), Cavalli, Ligeti, and Davies. His work for the English National Opera Ensemble includes Ligeti's Le Grand Macabre, The Mask of Orpheus, Glass's Akhnaten and the British premiere of Reimann's Lear (1989). He was musical director of Opera North 1990–96, leading the local stage premiere of Verdi's Jerusalem and the British premiere of Schreker's Der ferne Klang (1992), and the musical director of the English National Opera Ensemble from 1996.
