Dansville

Community in North Dansville town, Livingston County, west New York; population (1990) 5,002. It is located 72 km/45 mi south of Rochester. Settled in 1795, it possesses diverse light manufacturing plants, canneries, and nurseries. A sanatorium and health spa centre since 1858, it is best known as the birthplace of the American Red Cross, whose first local chapter was founded here in 1881 by Clara Barton.
