Dantons Tod

Opera by Gottfried von Einem (libretto by Boris Blacher and Einem, based on Georg Büchner's drama), first produced in Salzburg, Austria, on 6 August 1947. It is set during the French Revolution. The evil Robespierre spreads rumours that Danton is an aristocrat. After the trial Danton is guillotined; Lucile, the wife of his friend Desmoulins (also killed) longs for death.
