Darboy, Georges

Darboy, Georges (1813–1871)

French prelate, archbishop of Paris from 1863. He upheld the theory of episcopal independence and although opposed to the doctrine of papal infallibility, he submitted on its adoption. During the German siege of Paris 1870–71 he was seized by the Communards and shot in La Roquette prison.
