Dardanelle

Town and co-administrative headquarters (with Danville) of Yell County, west-central Arkansas; population (1990) 3,722. It is situated on the Arkansas River and Lake Dardanelle, 5 km/3 mi south-southwest of Russellville. It is a trade centre for a farming and lumbering area, and has sawmills and other light industry. The site of a former Indian post, it was here that the Cherokee leader Black Fox signed an 1820 treaty ceding territory south of the Arkansas River to the USA.
