Dardanus

In classical mythology, the founder of the Trojan royal house. He was the son of Zeus by the pleiad Electra.

Dardanus

Opera by Jean-Philippe Rameau (libretto by C A L de La Bruère), first produced at the Paris Opéra, France, on 19 November 1739. In the plot, Iphise loves her father's enemy Dardanus, but Teucer wants his daughter to marry Antenor. Captured by Antenor, Dardanus later escapes and slays an avenging sea monster, saving Antenor. Dardanus and Iphise are united.

The opera of the same title by Antonio Sacchini (libretto by de La Bruère, altered by N F Guillard), was first produced before the court at Versailles, France, on 18 September 1784 and was given its first Paris performance at the Opéra on 30 November 1784.

But Dardanus came to the coast of the mainland -- from him Erichthonius and thereafter Tros were sprung, and Ilus, and Assaracus, and godlike Ganymede, -- when he had left holy Samothrace in his many-benched ship.
Then Priam, descendant of Dardanus, spoke, saying, "Hear me, Trojans and Achaeans, I will now go back to the wind-beaten city of Ilius: I dare not with my own eyes witness this fight between my son and Menelaus, for Jove and the other immortals alone know which shall fall.
