ale

Originally malt liquor brewed without hops, but now generally a synonym for beer.

Mild ale is beer with a sweetish flavour and a fairly dark colour. Pale ale, whether in a cask (in which form it is usually termed bitter beer) or in a bottle, is light in colour and has a pronounced hop flavour.
