Thirsk

Market town in North Yorkshire, England, 37 km/23 mi northwest of York; population (2001) 5,600. Trading takes place here in livestock, corn, wool, and timber. It forms a continuous built-up area with Sowerby (see Sowerby Bridge).

In November 2001 archaeologists announced the discovery near Thirsk of one of the largest prehistoric hill forts in Britain.

The fictional village of Darrowby, the North Riding setting for the vets' adventures, was represented by Askrigg in the North Yorkshire Dales.
Tourism was developed via the James Herriot TV series which ran from 1978-90 using many spots for location filming including Askrigg which doubled up for the vet's fictional Darrowby.
When I went to Thirsk, the town made famous in all those vet stories by James Herriot - who called it Darrowby - it was market day and a disc- only parking system seemed to be in operation.
