Thirsk

Market town in North Yorkshire, England, 37 km/23 mi northwest of York; population (2001) 5,600. Trading takes place here in livestock, corn, wool, and timber. It forms a continuous built-up area with Sowerby (see Sowerby Bridge).

In November 2001 archaeologists announced the discovery near Thirsk of one of the largest prehistoric hill forts in Britain.

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit I spent quite some time searching a map for Herriot's home town of Darrowby before realizing it was fictional.
The 200-year-old Red Bear pub is changing its name to The Darrowby Inne, and traditionalists say the move cheapens the town and the memory of James Alfred Wight, the popular veterinarian who used Herriot as his pen name.
