Darwin, Francis

Darwin, Francis (1848–1925)

English botanist, the third son of Charles Darwin. He was associated with his father's work until the latter's death, and edited his father's biography. In 1884 he was appointed lecturer and reader in botany at the University of Cambridge.

He is chiefly remembered by his students for the potometer he devised to measure the rate of water intake by plants.

His publications include Practical Physiology of Plants (with E H Acton, 1894) and The Elements of Botany (1895). His Life and Letters of Charles Darwin (1887) was followed by More Letters (1903).
