Urmia, Lake

Shallow lake in northwestern Iran, between the provinces of East and West Azerbaijan; area 4,000 sq km/1,544 sq mi; length 130 km/80 mi; width 50 km/31 mi. The lake is situated at an altitude of 1,450 m/4,757 ft. It has no outlet and is too salty to sustain life in its waters. The city of Urmia lies near the western shore.
