Dasent, George Webbe (1817-1896)

British scholar of Scandinavian literature and folklore. His publications include translations of Scandinavian tales and old Icelandic sagas, including The Prose or Younger Edda (1842) and Popular Tales from the Norse (1859), and The Saga of Burnt Njal (1861).

Born on the island of St Vincent in the West Indies, Dasent studied at London and Oxford. Joining the diplomatic service, he was sent to Stockholm, Sweden. In London, he was an assistant editor of The Times 1845-70 and professor of English literature and modern history at King's College 1853-66. He also wrote four novels.
