Dashhowuz

Welayaty (region) in northern Turkmenistan; area 75,400 sq km/29,112 sq mi; population (1996) 738,000. The capital is Dashhowuz. The region lies on the northern fringes of the Kara-Kum desert; irrigated agriculture is practised in the Amu Darya valley. Industry is mainly concentrated in the capital, and consists of cotton-ginning and food packing; the main agricultural activity is the cultivation of cotton.
