search engineIn computing, online program to help users find information on the Internet. Commercial search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Lycos comprise databases of documents, Usenet articles, images, and news stories, which can be searched by keying in a key word or phrase. The databases are compiled by a mixture of automated agents (spiders) and webmasters registering their sites. US researchers estimate that about 500 times as much Web site information is hidden from search engines as is open to them.
