Datini, Francesco di Marco

    0.02 sec.

Datini, Francesco di Marco (c. 1335–1410)

Italian merchant. From his home town of Prato, near Florence, he built up a trading empire in northern Italy, Avignon, Aragon, and Majorca. After 1378 he settled in Florence, joined the silk guild there, and used his surplus wealth to embark on banking. His letters and account books have survived, affording an unparalleled insight into the life and values of a wealthy middle-class merchant in 14th-century Italy.
