Kavala

Town in northeastern Greece, capital of Kavala department, built on a promontory; population (2001 est) 64,400. Its port handles 6% of Greek trade. Exports include tobacco and manganese, and imports include fertilizers, wheat, and timber. There are flour and rice mills. The town was a member of the Attica Naval League in 478–463 BC and was later a Roman naval base.

There is evidence that Neapolis occupied the site in 500 BC. Under the Byzantine Empire it was called Christopolis. It was destroyed by the Turks in 1368, but later rebuilt.

The Apostle St Paul visited Kavala in AD 50–51. It is the seat of an Orthodox archbishop.
