dauphin

Title of the eldest son of the kings of France, derived from the personal name of a count, whose lands, known as the Dauphiné, traditionally passed to the heir to the throne from 1349 to 1830.

Dauphin

Town in southwest Manitoba, Canada; population (1991) 8,453. It is situated 258 km/160 mi northwest of Winnipeg, and 19 km/12 mi west of the south end of Lake Dauphin. Situated in the fertile lowlands of the Vermilion River, it was founded in 1741 near a French trading post. An agricultural distribution and retail centre, it is involved in lumbering and fishing as well. The National Ukrainian Festival is held here every August, celebrating Ukrainian settlements of the late 1890s. Riding Mountain National Park is to the south.
