Dauphin County

County in southeast Pennsylvania; area 1,367 sq km/528 sq mi; population (1990) 237,813. It is bordered to the southwest and west by the Susquehanna River. Its administrative headquarters is Harrisburg, which is also the state capital. It is divided into two sections by the Blue Mountains, which run southwest across the county, separating it into a coal mining region to the north and an agricultural and industrial region to the south. The county also includes suburban areas around Harrisburg.
