Davao Oriental

Province of southeast Mindanao Island in the Philippines; area 5,164 sq km/ 1,994 sq mi; population (1995) 413,000. The capital is Mati. The province is poor and sparsely populated; subsistence agriculture (rice and corn) is widespread. There are aquaculture and small livestock projects.
